Melding free improvisation and contemporary chamber music into a playful, thrilling headspace of expression, Virago is an unusually instrumented quartet that improvises through collaborations with composers, audience members, visual artists, and musicians across genres. Founded at the University of Michigan in 2018 and now based in Detroit, MI, Virago is Sofia Carbonara (percussion), Wesley Hornpetrie (cello), BethAnne Kunert (saxophone), and Meg Rohrer (violin/viola). Virago released their debut EP Listening for Bells, featuring the music of Harriet Steinke, in January of this year, music that is exuberant, exploratory, sometimes gritty, and always free. Their performance at A2SF this summer is sure to be the same.
This event is free and takes place at Top of the Park located at 915 E. Washington, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Get directions and parking details here.
