Calling all swing dancers! PD9 is a hot ten-piece out of Detroit that the Free Press named “one of Detroit’s great party bands.” Referring to themselves as The D’s own down and dirty little big band, they are known nationally for curating some of the best in early jazz traditions and Black American musical influences of the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. “More hot than sweet,” bandleader RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell lead a show that sweeps across Swing Era tributes to Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, through the R&B of King Porter and Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams, and into the transcendent realms of Afro-futuristic Sun Ra. In 2016, they won the Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Traditional Jazz Artist/Group. PD9’s latest release, A Salute to Strayhorn, celebrates the composer Billy Strayhorn, best known for his celebrated collaborations with Duke Ellington.
