JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound

Friday, June 8 @ 10:15pm
Rackham Stage

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound is post-punk soul: six and a half feet of raw emotion and sweat, with one leather boot planted in gutsy R&B and the other in taut minimalist grind. Named “the real deal” by The Chicago Tribune, this is a neo-soul band that connects with people the old-fashioned way, by whipping them into a frenzy with honest appeal and unbridled enthusiasm. Inspired by politically themed soul artists of the 70’s like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Gil Scott Heron, they’ll be sharing songs from their 2018 concept album Red Black & Blue (vol. 1), a poignant, bold exploration of political and social themes surrounding being Black in America in 2018. The band writes, “The scars of the social & political cautionary tale on Red Black & Blue are layered on top of a bed of rich vocal harmonies, orchestrated horns and vintage keyboards, allowing JC to sing freely from his Soul which blasts through the negativity.”
