After winning the coveted top honor at the Thelonious Monk and Sarah Vaughan jazz vocal competitions, the 26-year-old breakout jazz singer Jazzmeia Horn is a talent ready to take her place alongside the best headlining jazz vocalists of today. A sophisticated study of Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, and Mary J. Blige, her Grammy-nominated 2017 début A Social Call encompasses her deft approach to artistry and clarity of purpose. Horn’s expressive range, rich tonality, and impeccable, playful scat singing enliven jazz standards like “East of the Sun (West of the Moon),” hard bop anthems like “Afro-Blue,” and gospel’s “Wade in the Water.” She brings the same passion to her own uplifting compositions, using her voice to sermonize on issues of common concern.
From singing gospel in her grandfather’s church to headlining this year’s Newport Jazz Festival, a love of jazz forms and her self-expression through them have carried Horn on her rise. She first embraced her identity as a jazz singer at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas where she connected to jazz composition, her love of Sarah Vaughan, and her talent for scatting. In 2009, she moved to Manhattan to attend The New School’s jazz and contemporary music program. Insiders took notice of her being on the scene with musicians like drummer Winard Harper, pianist Junior Mance, trombonist and Lincoln Center Alumni Vincent Gardner, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, guitarist Peter Bernstein, saxophonist Vincent Herring, pianist Kirk Lightsey, saxophonist Frank Wess, and pianist Ellis Marsalis.
A Social Call, proudly announces the arrival of a gorgeous, fully realized stylist. This summer she will headline major festivals including Newport, SF Jazz and Spoleto. Her group “The Artistry of Jazz Horn” has remarkable chemistry and includes a pianist, bassist, drummer, saxophonist, poet, dancer, and herself as vocalist. Their spirited group performances assemble great storytelling, inspired message-giving, and a bright, memorable presentation.
