Australia’s Strange Fruit: Tall Tales of the High Seas

Thursday, June 29 @ 5:55pm North Ingalls Mall

As a highlight of the University of Michigan Bicentennial celebration, Australia’s Strange Fruit are entering new and exciting waters to tell even taller tales in this world premiere!

Filled with equal measures of spectacle, disaster, and beauty, this fantastic voyage follows the antics of three eccentric mariners as they explore the power of the imagination in a quest for common ground. Be amazed as these world-renowned acrobats dip and sway atop incredible sway-pole masts as their vessel “The Fabulist” pitches and rolls above Top of the Park.

Australia’s Strange Fruit is famous for their beautifully costumed, choreographed dancers gracefully dipping and bowing above the crowd on elevated poles. Since 1994, this Melbourne company has performed at over 600 international festivals in over 55 countries, to well over 5 million people. They last joined us in 2011, attracting record attendance at Top of the Park, consistently drawing over 3,000 people to each of their performances, and are the most demanded return performers in our annual audience surveys.

Come early and stay afterward to hear the University of Michigan’s Head Carillonneur Tiffany Ng will perform a music score of maritime songs co-curated with the Artistic Director of Australia’s Strange Fruit on the world famous Burton Memorial Tower carillon.  The University of Michigan is celebrating 200 years of impact throughout 2017. On June 27th, Australia’s Strange Fruit will be preceded by the MStaff200 event, a free afternoon festival on the U-M Diag that celebrates the contributions of university staff. The “Tall Tales of the High Seas” show lasts 30 minutes, come early to get a good spot for this all age and family-friendly performance.

This event was made possible with the support of the University of Michigan Bicentennial Committee, The National Endowment for the Arts and The A2SF Imagination Fund Families; The Belden Family, Cindy and John Nixon, Fran and Irwin Martin, and Eileen and Ron Weiser.
